As the largest poetry website, The Academy of American Poets is a location that celebrates art and poetry. Certainly, donors make the site possible, and people like John Blondel Jr., who is on the Board and Finance Committee, help the site to keep running.
Each fall, the Academy of American Poets has a free series of conversations that explore how art forms engage with poetry. They pair some of the most unlikely people together so that poets can speak with artists, dancers, chefs, actors and others.
On November 14th, for instance, at the Housing Works Bookstore Café in New York City they will have Pulitzer Prize winning poet Yusef Komunyakaa in conversation with Grammy-winning jazz vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant. This is a chance for anyone in the area to hear what these fantastically successful artists have to say about their art and about the connections among various art forms.
The Academy of American Poets offers many other services as well. They have materials for teachers to use in their classrooms. They have a poem a day program where people can read a poem each day and enrich their lives in doing so. And they have many other opportunities for educational growth and poetry enhancement.
